My Journey with Essential Oils: From Childhood Therapy to Everyday Alchemy

When I was a little girl, I suffered from intense anxiety. Each week, my mum would take me to see a renowned aromatherapist—it became my sanctuary, my therapy.

That was my first introduction to the world of essential oils.

I still remember the scent of Bergamot greeting me as I stepped into the massage room, a space bathed in natural light. Glass walls framed a lush green garden, and the gentle sound of trickling water created a serene backdrop, soothing my nervous system before I even understood what that meant.

It was serene.
It was natural.
It was a moment in nature.

And just like that, I’d feel at ease.

My mum’s approach to health was far from conventional. She rarely turned to allopathic medicine, opting instead for remedies from the earth. Burn herself on the iron? She’d head straight to the garden for a fresh aloe vera leaf. Sleepless nights? She’d tuck a pouch of lavender flowers from our French lavender bush under my pillow. Moths in the cupboard? She’d scatter cloves instead of using mothballs.

Unknowingly, I grew up surrounded by essential oils, both in their natural form—like lavender flowers or clove buds—and in their bottled essence during those weekly aromatherapy sessions.

Fast forward to my 30s, during my holistic practitioner training, I completed a module on aromatherapy. That’s where I was introduced to subtle aromatherapy—using oils to support the energetic and emotional body. This deepened my love for essential oils and set me on a path of discovery.

In 2016, I attended a class on essential oils and discovered a whole new level of quality—pure enough to ingest. Up until then, I’d been cautious, told to use essential oils sparingly and only on energy points. The idea that oils could safely support my body, home, and emotional health felt revolutionary.
