Start with a Baseline

Change is an essential part of growth—it's how we evolve and thrive as human beings. But before we can step into transformation, we need to know exactly where we’re starting. Awareness is the foundation of meaningful change, and that begins by creating a baseline.

A baseline is simply a clear snapshot of where you are right now. It’s about taking the time to observe and track what you’re doing so you can identify what needs to shift. Often, we’re on autopilot, unaware of the habits, patterns, or behaviours that hold us back. For example, when clients come to me wanting to lose weight, the first thing I recommend is keeping a food journal for a week. Time and again, they’re astonished to discover not only how much they’re eating (or how little) but also the quality of what they consume. Tracking shines a light on the truth—and the truth is always the first step toward change.

Think of it like trying to use a map to navigate to a new destination. The first and most important thing you need to find is the “You Are Here” marker. Without knowing where you are, it’s impossible to chart a path to where you want to go. The same applies to personal growth and transformation. Before you can make any meaningful progress, you need to have a clear understanding of your starting point.

This principle applies to every area of life. I once worked with a client who felt like she didn’t have enough time to manage her responsibilities. After tracking her daily activities, she realised hours were being lost to mindless TV watching. Whether it’s your time, spending, energy, or emotional triggers, tracking provides clarity, and clarity paves the way for empowered choices.

Spend a week or two observing and logging what’s happening in your life—your spending, your sleep patterns, your habits—whatever aligns with your goals. This process may feel tedious at first, but it’s invaluable. With a baseline, you can chart a clear, informed path forward.

This is a practice I use with my clients all the time. If you’re ready to create real change and need support identifying where to start, check out my coaching programs. Together, we can map your starting point and build a strategy for transformation that’s aligned with your unique journey.
